After the French Revolution brought an end to monastic life at St. Peters abbey, the property was bought by the city of Gent, and it served as a military barracks until 1946. Since then, it has housed temporary exhibitions.The most impressive building in the Abbey complex is the baroque abbey church, begun in 1629.
