The surrealist painter Rene Magritte (born 1898) lived in this Brussels home for nearly 24 years after setting up his workshop there in 1930.The period was Magritte's most productive -- he created most of his masterpieces during this time. Many of the architectural quirks of the house, for example the decorative door handles, found their way into Magritte's work. It also served as a center for surrealist Belgian art culture, hosting weekly meetings, parties, and functions.

Renovations transforming the house into a museum were completed in 1999. The first and second floors contain original works, letters, documents, objects, and photographs; the third floor preserves the artist's studio.
