The collection of the National Maritime Museum of Belgium exceeds 94,000 items, ranging from pocket compasses, to dozens of finely-detailed scale models, to full-sized ships and boats. The actual vessels are docked in the maritime park, next to the museum building, and include canal boats, fishing boats, and pleasure yachts. Other important items include the archives of the Belgica expedition to the South Pole of 1897-99, and large documentary sections on shipbuilding, naval training, the Red Star cruise ship service of the early 20th century, and the Oostend-Dover ferry service.
