The Charlier Hotel was originally the property of Henri Van Cutsem, an art collector and patron of the Belgian sculptor Guillaume Joseph Charlier. Upon Van Cutsem's death in 1904, his house passed to Charlier, and upon Charlier's death in 1925, it became the Museum of the Hotel Charlier.
The permanent collections at the Museum were gathered by Van Cutsem and Charlier. The paintings and sculptures concentrate on works that were contemporary during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the collection was actively expanding, and include important pieces by James Ensor, Rik Wouters, and of course, Charlier himself. The collections of furniture, tapestry, and metalsmithery are much more diverse, even haphazard in their selection, but interesting nonetheless.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Museum hosts many contemporary art showings.
