The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Gent has two collections, housed in two distinctly different spaces. The older space is the former Hotel de Coninck, built in 1755, which houses 17th and 18th century decorative furnishings and whose exquisite decor -- such as the carved wooden chandelier in the dining room -- serves as its own attraction. The newer space is a modernist wing completed in 1992, complete with a hydraulic lift in the center of the building which makes the floors adaptable. In this wing visitors will find a superb collection of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and contemporary works.
