The Ommegang is a theatrical recreation of a historic pageant: the entry of Emperor Charles V and his entourage into the
Brussels Grand Place. That specific Ommegang took place in 1549; it is now recreated every year during the month of July. Festivities include the royal entry, flag processions, horse shows, craft guild presentations, games, acrobatics, and dance performances. Though the Ommegang was once an event of religious significance, it has lost its sacred connotation -- more than anything else, the modern Ommegang is a celebration of wealth and glamour.
