Search Borgloon-Rijkel

Rijkel Castle is in a state of flux; it is too dilapidated to open for public tours. The northwest tower collapsed during the 1960s, and a serious preservation campaign was begun; however, there is no target date for completion. It currently belongs to the province of Limburg, having been bought by a historical society in 1936, then bequeathed in 1965.

Rijkel was originally a simple farm with a moat, acquiring grand proportions only in the 16th century. It has been alternately neglected then expanded and restored several times throughout its history. It would probably be apt to characterize Rijkel as a money pit."
