The Belgian Royal Palace is located on the site of the former Palace of the Dukes of Brabant, which burned down in 1731. The current building was constructed piecemeal over nearly a century. In 1786, four houses were built; an ambitious plan conceived in 1814 to interconnect and renovate these was incomplete by the time of the Belgian Revolution in 1831.
