St. Dympna's Church

Saint Dympna was an Irish princess who ran away, some say to evade the incestuous designs of her father. Her father tracked her down to Geel and had her decapitated, an act which was thought could only have been the work of a madman. In the years that followed, the supposed gravesite of Dympna became a shrine to which those seeking cure from mental illness would make pilgrimages. St. Dympna's Church is built on this site; there are several elaborate monuments, including a mausoleum.
