The 97 meter Tower of St. Rumboldt's Cathedral dominates the town of
Mechelen, but it is well shy of its original plan for a tower of 160 meters! Construction of the tower, intended to be the tallest in all of the Lowlands, began in a time of plenty, but regional economic contraction while it was underway forced the project to a halt. The tower contains not one, but two carillons, one antique and one modern; both are in perfect working order, and free concerts are given regularly.
