Antoine Wiertz willed his legacy to the Belgian state, and a year after he died in 1865, the bulk of the materials which would become the Wiertz museum became national property. Wiertz was an Belgian Romantic artist who preferred dramatic subjects, and often worked on a grand scale; one of his masterpieces, "The Greeks and the Trojans claiming the Body of Patrocles", measures over 5 x 8 meters.

The Wiertz Museum is one of four institutions administered by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
