Angel Island has a three thousand year history, beginning with the Coastal Miwok Indians as a hunting and fishing site. Later as a haven for Spanish explorer Juan de Ayala, a U.S. Army post, and a processing point for immigrants from 1910 to 1940. During WWII, Japanese and German POW's were held on the island and soon to follow, a Nike missile base. Angel island became a state park in 1958.
Access to the park is by public ferry or private boat. Campers should arrange travel before making reservations. Bring charcoal or a camp stove. No wood fires allowed. After sunset private boats must anchor offshore or on mooring buoys in Ayala Cove.
