Humboldt Lagoons State Park

In the early 1900's, early farmers drained Dry Lagoon and several types of crops were attempted but none proved economical. Today the marshland habitat has returned and supports a rich variety of marsh plants, birds and other animals. In the early days, several dairy ranches were established along the shores of Stone Lagoon. Later, when the highway was improved, a motel/restaurant called the "Little Red Hen" was located next to the lagoon. This business continued in operation until 1979. The restaurant building was remodeled into a museum and park office and is now the Humboldt Lagoons Visitor Center and bookstore.The park offers picnicking, boating, fishing, beachcombing, camping and hiking and is located near Trinidad, 40 miles north of Eureka and 55 miles south of Crescent City on Highway 101. It is close to Harry A. Merlo State Recreation Area. Visitor center hours are 10-3 daily summer. Day use areas hours are sunrise to sunset, and camping is open year round.
