Mercy has a rich history of responding to the healthcare needs of the Sacramento Community. It was more than a century ago that the Sisters of Mercy broke ground on Sacramento's first private hospital, Mater Misericordiae (Latin for "Mother of Mercy"). The hospital ? one of the most modern, best-equipped hospitals in California at the time ? operated at 23rd and R streets until 1925, when the Sisters opened Mercy General Hospital at 40th and J streets. While Mercy has grown in size and sophistication over the past century, its mission has remained unchanged. Today, it is the largest healthcare system in the area, with six hospitals in Sacramento, Yolo and Nevada counties.
