Mount Konocti

Mount Konocti has been an alluring landmark in Lake County, stirring the interest of visitors from all walks of life, piquing the curiosity of history buffs, and challenging the skills of scientists and researchers.

The name for the enormous mountain that overlooks Clear Lake comes from the Pomo word "Knoktai" taken from "kno" for mountain and "hatai" for woman, according to historical accounts.

Mount Konocti is a dormant volcano that sits at an elevation of 4,300 feet. Indian folklore and legend offer explanations of its origin, while geologists rely on various studies and research to account for the four distinct peaks of the mountain.

While the slopes are indeed inviting to hikers, most of the property on the mountain is privately owned, and visitors are allowed only with permission. Guided hikes are offered on selected days. Call (707)-489-1980 for reservations and information.
