Madera County Library, serving an area of 132,000 residents, has a collection of 160,000 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 4,400 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials, as well as 2,000 video items, such as DVDs and VHS tapes. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public. Staffing consists of 19 employees, of whom 2 are fully accredited librarians, plus volunteers. The system comprises one central library and 4 branch libraries. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $198,000. Patrons make 540,000 visits annually, and check out materials 420,000 times. Twenty-seven percent of all check-outs are children's materials.

The Rio Vista Bass Derby Festival Rio Vista CA October11-13 Rio Vista is proud to host the oldest fishing derby on the West Coast. The festival is a three-day derby for bass, catfish and sturgeon. The festival also boasts music, food and fun for fishermen and non-fishing children and adults as well. The events include a carnival, live music and dancing, classic car show, a pancake breakfast, parade and BBQ. A large fireworks display is also featured on Saturday night.
