Denver is situated on the plains at the junctions of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek in central Colorado. The seat of Denver County, it is known as The Mile High City.
Founded in 1858, Denver became the territorial capital in 1867. Silver and gold strikes in the 1870s-80s ushered in prosperity.
Today Denver, population of about 2.4 million, boasts one of the world's largest sheep markets and is also one of the foremost cattle markets west of the Mississippi River.
