Avery Memorial |
This 1750 center-chimney colonial house built by a naval ensign is on park grounds, in the Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park in Groton. Many of John Avery's men were killed and wounded during the Revolutionary War battle here. Afterwards some of the wounded were put in a wagon by the British and rolled down the hill. Occupants of the house brought the soldiers in and tended to their wounds; there is a sign on the house to this effect. It was moved from its original location on nearby Thames Street. The period items are on loan or owned by the house. Season: June-Labor Day Sat-Sun 1p m-5pm.
