Fort Griswold State Park

This 860-acre park is the site of the 1781 battle where the British under Benedict Arnold captured the Fort and massacred the colonial militia and locals under the command of Col. William Ledyard. The Ebenezer Avery House, which sheltered the wounded after the battle, has been restored on the grounds. A Revolutionary War museum also depicts the era. A granite monument was dedicated in 1830 to the men who defended Fort Griswold and was the inspiration for the Washington Monument.
