Ancient Burying GroundCenter Church |
This was the city's only cemetery until 1803. Still public property, it forms a green oasis in middle downtown Hartford. The oldest gravestone dates from 1663. Buried here are many of the city's early founders.
The cemetery is on the north and west sides of the 1807 Center Church, which traces its history to a meetinghouse established in 1636. The church on Main St. contains six Tiffany windows that depict religious events.
Tours of the church are available by appointment Cemetery open daily, dawn till dusk.
