Fort Saybrook Monument Park |
In 1635 Governor Winthrop learned the Dutch wanted to occupy their trading post permanently. He dispatched a vessel with 20 armed men commanded by Lt Edward Giibbons and Sgt Samuel Willard to seize military control of the Point. Thus was established Fort Saybrook, Connecticut's third oldest settlement and its first military fortification. The 18-acre park depicts the history of the Saybrook Colony, with views of the Connecticut River.
