Gay City State Park

Remains of an 18th century, abandoned mill village is the centerpiece of 1,569 acre Gay City State Park. Gay City State Park is located off route 85 about 4 miles south of Bolton.

Led by Elijah Andrus, Gay City was first settled in 1796 by a religious sect. The Gays soon comprised the majority of the 25 or more families who then lived in the community. Existing as distinctly separate from the neighboring communities the residents kept strictly to themselves. They built a sawmill along the Black Ledge River and erected homes from the lumber.

This park offers an open field area for softball, football or volleyball games. Other activities available include picnicking, interpretive trail, fishing, cross-country skiing and ice skating. Also this park is handicapped accessible.
