Henry Whitfield State Museum |
This museum is housed in what is said to be the oldest building in Connecticut and the oldest stone house in New England. Built in 1639 as the home of Reverend Henry Whitfield, a founder and the first minister of Guilford, this house also originally served as a fort for the community. Its massive stone walls and chimneys, steeply-pitched roof, and casement windows reflect the style of post-medieval domestic architecture found in England, but rare in 17th century America and unique today. The building was restored in the 1930s, incorporating what remained of the original structure. Since 1899, the Henry Whitfield State Museum has been owned and operated by the State of Connecticut.
Visitors can view 17th through 19th century furnishings and stroll through a visitors center.
Open Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4:30pm, February 1 through December 14. By appointment the rest of the year. Closed Good Friday and December 25.
