New Haven Connecticut |
New Haven is located in New Haven County, south of Meriden between West Haven and North Haven, along Interstate 91 near Lake Saltonstall. Home to the campus of Yale University, New Haven is situated on an arm of Long Island Sound about 70 miles NE of New York City. The bay and harbor of the city is formed by the meeting of three small rivers, the West, the Mill, and the Quinnipiac. New Haven is partly encircled by hills which rise to around 400 feet in elevation east and west of the city.
The community was founded by Puritans in 1638. Originally part of the New Haven Colony, it joined Connecticut in 1665 and was a busy port during the 18th and 19th centuries. New Haven is now part of the New Haven-Meriden, Connecticut metro area.
