This mansion dates from 1756 and was the home of wealthy shipowner and trader Captain Nathaniel Shaw Jr. and housed the Naval Office for Connecticut during the Revolution.
The first time George Washington visited New London he did not sleep here, as he was a British officer. But on his second visit, Washington, the American commander and a British rebel, did sleep here; rebels had to show more discretion in selecting sleeping quarters.
Displays include antique furniture, silver, china and family portraits. Changing exhibits focus on New London County history. Flower gardens can be toured in May through September.
This mansion now serves as headquarters of The New London County Historical Society. Open Wednesday-Friday 1pm-4pm, Saturday 10am-4pm; closed holidays.
