Founded in 1893, American University is an independent liberal arts institution affiliated with the Methodist Church. Approximately 5000 full-time undergraduates pursue their studies at the university's 78-acre campus, five miles northwest of downtown Washington. About two thirds of students live on campus. Fraternities and sororities are active. Popular majors include international studies, communications, and government.
