Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is a private institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. It offers programs in arts and sciences, business administration, foreign service, languages and linguistics, and nursing. Competition for admission to the undergraduate program is intense, with only one out of every four to five applicants being accepted. The graduate program is somewhat larger than the undergraduate. Georgetown participates in several intercollegiate sports, being best known for its basketball program.
