It stands on a plain between the sea dn the South Downs near the Chichester harbor on the English Channel. The heart of the city is surrounded by an ancient wall, about two miles in circuit. Its Norman cathedral was erected in the 11th century. It was for some time the capital of the Kingdom of Sussex. During the Middle Ages, Chichester was an important commercial center.
