Lewes is the county town of
Sussex. It is located on the
Ouse, eight miles northeast of
Brighton, seven miles from the port of Newhaven, and 50 miles south of
London. It has the remains of an ancient castle. The battle in which
Henry III was defeated by Simon de Montfort in 1264 was fought here.
