Tynemouth is situated near the mouth of the
Tyne and on its north bank, about nine miles east of
Newcastle Upon Tyne, opposite South Shields. It includes the townships of Cullercoats, Chirton, Preston, and the port of North Shields, ans is an important residential district and resort of the region.
There are ruins of an ancient priory, founded 617-633. The monks of Tynemouth priory were working Tyneside coal seams as early as the 13th century.
