An 11,000-acre wilderness area and wildlife sanctuary of the National Audubon Society. A large colony of American wood storks nests here from November-April. The sanctuary also contains the largest stand of virgin bald cypress in North America; some trees are said to be more than 700 years old. Alligators can be seen regularly from the boardwalk on the 2.25-mile self-guided tour; an optional trail shortens the walk to 1 mile. Volunteer naturalists are usually on the boardwalk to answer questions, and trailside benches and rain shelters are provided. Corkscrew-staff guided walks are offered for groups of 10 or more and school groups, by reservation. Picnic areas are available adjacent to the parking area; other facilities include restrooms and an on-site Nature Store. Open daily.
