North Port is located in
Sarasota County southeast of Sarasota between
Venice and
Punta Gorda along US Hwy 41 near Charlotte Harbor, the
Gulf of Mexico and the Myakka River State Park. North Port is part of the
Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida metro area.
The city was founded in June 1959 by General Development Corp./Mackle Brothers as a company-owned, company-run city.
North Port's original name was North Port Charlotte, but the Charlotte was dropped in 1974.
North Port also is rich in recreational opportunities. There are two golf courses and plenty of fishing or boating opportunities, while giving way to 144 miles of waterways in the city, some with direct access to the Myakka River.
