Ocala National Forest

The Ocala National Forest has the distinction as the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River and as the most southernmost in the nation. This 383,000 acre forest offers a wealth of water-oriented recreation opportunities. Four springs feed four crystal-clear creeks and rivers that provide excellent canoeing and boating. Camping, picnicking and swimming facilities are located at three springs. Only swimming and picnicking are permitted at Silver Glen Springs. The numerous forest lakes and grassy ponds provide some of the state's best bass fishing. Hiking trails, ranging from one to seven miles, include a section of the Florida National Scenic Trail. Salt Springs has a wheelchair-accessible campsite.

The subtropical-like atmosphere of this forest, as well as its proximity to the major tourist destinations of St. Augustine, Tampa, Orlando and Daytona Beach, have made it a favorite vacation spot for northern visitors.
