Claywell Elementary School was built and named for the late Henry Claywell in 1982. Mr. Claywell's contributions to education were during his 14-year career as an administrator in county schools, and later while he was a civic leader in Tampa, and as organizer of the Hillsborough County Teachers Credit Union (now known as Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union). The school colours are blue and yellow and the mascot is the cougar. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their school colors on Fridays to show their pride in Claywell.
