Online Highways Home > Florida > Naples City Map with Features Palm Cottage Collier County Historical Society The Historical Society is headquartered in the 102-year-old Palm Cottage, the second-oldest house in Collier County as well as one of the few remaining tabby-built buildings in Florida. The historic Vernacular-style house was built in 1895 for Henry Watterson, the famous editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal. The walls are constructed of tabbie mortar, a primitive form of concrete made from local materials. The making of tabbie mortar entails a process of burning seashells over buttonwood at an intensely high heat, then mixed with lime and seawater to produce the mortar.
