The airport was organized to serve the needs of Sarasota and Manatee counties. Planning began in 1939 and aviation facilities were completed in 1942. Since World War II had then broken out, the facilities were leased to the army for the duration of the war. In 1947, they were returned with improvements and an enlargement of the land.
