The variety of nature in Bailleul and the surrounding Flanders Hills lends itself to relaxation and leisure, with 500 kms of waymarked hiking paths (some of them crossing the border into Belgium) and a host of organized excursions. Chapels, abbeys, thatched cottages, windmills, belfries and bells offer the visitor a change of scenery and a glimpse of a traditional way of life. Local sites include the Monastery of Notre Dame on the Mont des Cats, a 19th-century Trappist monastery renowned for its production of cheeses, and the Regional Phytosociology Centre, an officially recognized National Botanical Repository with a garden containing close to 600 endangered medicinal plants.
