Elne France |
Situated 4 km from the Mediterranean Sea at the foot of the Pyrenees, the ancient town of Elne was the ecclesiastic capital of the Roussillon from 568 to 1602. The magnificent 10th-century Romanesque Cathedral still exists today, along with the blue-veined marble cloister built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its lively market, which takes place in the town center on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning all year round, is a reflection of Elnes 1,000-year-old agricultural tradition. The craft market which takes place each Sunday morning and a number of summer festivals round out the offerings for visitors.
