Famous as the site of the wedding of Louis XIV and the Infanta Marie Theresa of Spain in 1660, which created an alliance between France and Spain, the Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste (at the corner of rue Gambetta and rue Garat) is the biggest of all Basque churches. The triple-tiered interior houses an elaborate, 17th-century gilded altarpiece. The door through which Louis led his bride, located to the right of the main entrance, was walled up after the ceremony.
