Covering 60 acres, the Jardin du Luxembourg is located in the heart of the Left Bank, centered around the Luxembourg Palace. This popular park is dominated by an octagonal pool, the Grand Bassin, which is surrounded by a formal garden and terraces. The gardens by Boyceau mix the typically French embroidery of flower beds with Italian-style grottoes and fountains, most of which have now disappeared -- save the Medicis fountain, erected in 1861 along the rue de Medicis. Among the parks attractions are an open-air caf, a puppet theater, tennis courts and a bee-keeping school.
