The fortified town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, located 210 km. from Paris, 73 km. from Calais and 136 km. from Lille, overlooks the Canche Valley. It is famous as the setting for Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables', with a performance of the play staged each year in town. Montreuil's citadelle has evolved over the centuries, with Vauban serving as the last major influence on its design. The town ramparts can be appreciated with one of several offered walks around the town walls. One leads visitors to the rooftop level of the town providing an expansive view of the area.
