Once the cathedral of coronations for French kings in memory of the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remi, the cathedral of Notre-Dame was badly damaged during World War I. Its restoration was largely funded by contributions from John D. Rockefeller and todays visitors can enjoy the cathedrals treasury of stained glass, including the rose window dedicated to the Virgin, and left portal on the west front which features the famous Smiling Angel statue. Each July and August, a sound-and-light show illuminates the Cathedral's history. Nearby, the Palais du Tau, formerly the archbishop's residence, houses many of Notre-Dame's original religious artifacts and coronation robes.
