Search Tournus

St-Philibert in Tournus is one of the oldest of the great Romanesque churches of Burgundy. Founded by a group of monks from Noirmoutier, off the Atlantic coast, who were forced from their home by invading Normans in the 9th century. They took with them relics of their patron saint, Philibert, whose bones can be seen in the abbey s choir. Dating back to the early 10th century, the church was rebuilt of pale-pink stone during the 10th-12th centuries.
