Eatonton Georgia

Eatonton is located in Putnam County, of which it is the county seat, and in the [zhistory] of the state, north of Macon between Monticello and Sparta along Highway 16 on the banks of the Little River near Lake Sinclair. Lake Oconee is just 7 miles east.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 7,047, an increase of 568 since 1990.

The Rock Eagle Effigy, a giant bird made of quartz boulders, is north of town. Well-known residents have included Alice Walker, writer and Joel Chandler Harris, writer.
