Rome is located in Floyd County, of which it is the county seat, northwest of Atlanta along Highway 27 on the banks of the Coosa River near the Alabama state line in the Mountains Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 30,899, an increase of 474 since 1990. Rome supplied cannons to the Confederate troops until Sherman's army captured the city in 1864.
