Summerville is located in Chattooga County, of which it is the county seat, just northwest of Rome between Menlo and Gore along Highway 48 on the banks of the Chattooga River near the Chattahoochee National Forest. Situated just east of the Alabama state line in the Mountains Region of the state.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,139, an increase of 114 since 1990.
