Waycross is located in
Ware County northeast of
Valdosta between
Homerville and
Jesup where US Highways 82 and 84 cross in the
Coast Region of the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,247, an increase of 32 since 1990.
Townspeople came up with an odd tourist gimmick in the 1950s. Local police would stop motorists with out-of-state license plates and escort them downtown, where they would be met by the Welcome World Committee and given overnight lodging, dinner and a trip to the swamp. The tradition ended when the interstates opened.
