This old spatter vent near the
Haleakala's Crater District is 65 feet deep and shot out molten lava when it was active. At the top of the l4 mile Sliding Sands Trail is the
House of the Sun Visitor Center on the crater's rim.
This arduous trail begins with a steep descent to the crater floor, then goes through the crater and up to the Halemauu trailhead. This trail descends to the crater floor by steep switchbacks and ends at the Holua cabin near the edge of the pit.
Hikers should wear sturdy shoes, carry plenty of water and let someone know their hiking plan.
