Hana Hwy (Hwy 36) |
This famous scenic road winds from Kahului - Maui to Hana. The road is paved and well-marked, but contains hundreds of curves and many one-lane bridges. A round trip takes a full day and there is no gas between Paia and Hana.
The road winds past gorges, ravines and water falls. Tourists can view Twin Falls at Mile 2 past the Hoolawa Bridge, painted bark eucalyptus trees at Mile 7, and Keanae Arboretum past Mile 17 and Wailua past Mile 19.
Beyond Hana are the Pools of 'Ohe'o. Pavement ends 2.5 miles past the pools and the road turns to gravel for the next 16 miles. Tourists should not drive rental cars without four-wheel drive here.
