This neo-classical building first opened as the Hawaii Theatre in 1922 with silent films and a pipe organ for accompaniment. It was purchased from the Bishop Estate after closing in 1984.
A nonprofit group raised $21 million for a complete restoration. The 1,400 seat theatre has trompe l'oeil mosaics and bas reliefs depicting scenes from Shakespearean plays. It reopened in 1996 for the productions.
